After interviewing dozens of women, and a few men for good measure, it is clear that not everyone is happy with their skin care purchases.

Over and over, we at the anti-aging journal here that this or that product doesn't work. Or that it helped, but wasn't worth the price.

Sadly, we have to agree. There has been little evidence that the more expensive lines offer significantly better results. In fact, some of the gimmicks used to promote the expensive lines have no proven impact whatever on maintaining the youthful beauty of your skin.

In short, it's a crapshoot, and the odds are against you.

The Unvarnished Truth about the Anti-aging Skin Care Industry

The fact of the matter is, there's not much out there that can guarantee the sort of dramatic results you hear in the advertising. To give you an inside look at what they consider when making and promoting a product, consider the following:

The promise of youthful beauty in cosmetics advertising has been with us… since people started advertising. But this appeal became commonplace. So to continue selling their products, which most likely didn't work well, if at all, these companies resorted to adding special "mechanisms" or reasons why their new-and-improved product would really work this time.

So they glommed on to antioxidants, and you saw those touted on every label. Organic was in vogue for a time, and some companies put that on every label – never mind the lack of any standard. (There is a campaign underway to tighten controls.)

These new appeals signal progress, and offer a new reason to believe that this product will be better than the last. Studies have not born this out.

The Secret to Ageless Beauty

It is true that cosmetics, meaning make-up, change appearance. But those come with their own problems, not least of which is the questionable ingredients they can contain.

We've already discussed the anti-aging skin care regimen – though it's worth mentioning that some products do help, and progress is being made. Our argument is simply that we shouldn't fall for the hype.

But the real secret is to take care of your skin from the inside out.

This subject is described at length elsewhere on this site, but for your convenience, here are the highlights:

Monitor your diet for allergens, which can cause breakouts and blemishes

Use a soap that doesn't have triclosan to maintain the beneficial bacteria on your skin

Consider using a quality probiotic supplement – gut health means skin health

Get the right kind of exercise to increase blood flow to the skin – high intensity training may be a good choice

Get enough sun for that radiant look – stop when your skin turns slightly pink to avoid risk of skin cancer

The Unnamed Threat to Preserving Youthful Skin

One factor that deserves special mention is stress, which can make it hard to follow any of the above tips. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for stress, and in many ways our modern world creates this challenge even when things are going well.

We don't interact personally, substituting email and social media, as well as work relationships that are not true friendships. We move often, without putting down roots.

The above hints for anti-aging skin care may actually help with stress – nothing like a light sun tan and being in shape to make you feel good about yourself. What's not said is our need to be with people. If you're feeling down, or unmotivated, get involved in something with people you like. You'll be surprised how much younger you can look with a smile.

The medical doctor is the most respected professional in America. At the same time, there is a strong sense that the medical profession itself has lost its way.

What's more, some have decided – often without justification – that allopathic medicine is the devil. These will avoid medical care – i.e. conventional medical care – at all costs. One need only look as far as some of the alternative treatments for breast cancer, a disease that has a low incidence of mortality if caught early. By the time the patient realized the alternative therapy isn't working, it's too late to operate.

So what's at the bottom of this issue?

I have heard enough about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to make my head swim. I admit not being an expert, but I have read some of their texts. For those New-Agers still hanging on out there, you may be interested to learn that in China, the public may talk in terms of TCM, but they go to allopathic physicians – the same sort you'll find at your local hospital.

But this doesn't really answer the question. A higher standard of proof is required than simply answering one anecdote with another.

There are a few studies available that show the benefits of alternative medicine. And after alternative therapies took hold in the 80s, even a certain percentage of doctors have gravitated towards these means of maintaining wellness.

The medical profession over the last two hundred years has in some ways improved dramatically. But we should consider its roots. Many doctors were driven by ego, and sought fortune and legacy in the invention of new tools and procedures. Nowadays, the watchword is profit, and the drug industry is driving the medical profession.

Along the way there have been countless good physicians. Patient, wellness oriented in approach, these doctors truly followed their Hippocratic oath. These days, from my interviews, I sense that it is a mere formality; a part of medical school graduation.

In fact, partly, this is the inspiration for this site, so that lay people can crack the profession and see what is really going on.

For instance, did you know that the drug companies track the prescriptions of your doctor? They know exactly how much and when your doctor prescribed a given medication. They use this information to push the doctor to prescribe more of their more profitable drugs.

Or consider how long they have been researching cancer. To my way of thinking, doctors have an obligation to press back against the drug researchers, and demand more effective treatment. The survival rate of chemotherapy at five years is a paltry 2.1 percent. Considering the billions of dollars invested in cancer research, and the multiples of that made dispensing relatively ineffective medication, it is clear that something is amiss.

Alternative medicine does have some useful therapies. You'll find some of them on this site. And they can help people feel cared for, which has been shown to improve white blood cell levels and boost immune system function – something the allopathic doctor doesn't yet seem to appreciate.

In the shift towards evidence-based medicine, however, allopathy seems to be coming of age. Rigor for medical practices has never been higher. Doctor's training has never been better. And some are finally starting to focus on the things that really matter: the root causes of illness.

While old dogma persists, it is important to recognize that new medical technologies are being developed every day, and we stand at the cusp of a new model of medicine. One that takes into account the human part of the patient, treating the causes of illness. One that can appreciate the good done by what are now considered alternative treatments where the evidence supports their efficacy.

Lap band side effects are common, but the allure of this surgery keeps people coming through the doors, and pays for many a doctor's vacation.

This is not to indict the medical profession (though other pages on this site seem to have no qualms about doing so…). It is, however, a wake up call for those struggling with weight loss.

For some, the struggle to lose weight has plagued them for years. Nothing seems to work, no diet makes a difference. Exercise doesn't bring any appreciable results no matter how hard you work out, and you've just about given up hope.

Sometimes it seems like the only way out is to go under the knife.

But wait!

Before you take this dangerous and unnecessary route, know the facts.

Nearly half of all patients require removal of their bands

Almost 30% experienced band erosion

A full 60% needed additional surgery

As if these weren't enough, nearly 40% of those who undergo weight loss surgery experience major complications such as the following:

Malnutrition

Kidney stones

Black-outs

Liver failure

1 out of 50 chance of death within 30 days of surgery

And the list goes on.

Lap Band side effects include loss of limb?

Mary Beth Ruphard was significantly over weight, enough to qualify for the surgery. Unfortunately for her, there was a complication leading to a severe loss of circulation in her legs. Ultimately, her legs died below the knee, and were removed in a later surgery.

While this loss is surely devastating, far worse is the risk of loss of life. In fact, one group of clinics in California lost 5 patients since 2009. These clinics routinely advertise the procedure on television, preying on the emotional state of the overweight.

The worst part is, many of these surgeries get no better results – or worse results considering the incidence of side effects following the lap band surgery.

"So how can I lose weight when nothing seems to work?"

If you look forward to a lifetime of nausea, no snacking, and a limited diet, gastric bypass surgery may be for you.

If, on the other hand, you'd like to avoid these side effects, consider the following alternative.

Lose weight in three easy steps

Severely restrict carbohydrates. This one can seem onerous at first, but in time you'll learn to find nutrient-rich alternatives that leave you satiated without packing on the pounds. Severely here is a relative term. Aim for 30% or less of total caloric intake from carbohydrates.

Eat more fat.Counterintuitive, yes, but the devil is in the details. You don't want to add just any fat to your diet, and may wind up cutting fat consumption in total. But you will certainly want to increase your consumption of healthy fats, including omega 3 fats, and other essential fatty acids.

Adding high intensity training to your routine.High intensity is relative. For many, walking is a high intensity exercise. And that's perfectly fine. The key is to raise your heart rate for a short period, let it slow, then raise it back to the same level. Wash, rinse, repeat. To maximize your results, you will want to exercise for 20 minutes, 3 times per week. Exercising more is counterproductive at this stage.

By now most of us are familiar with antioxidants for skin care. They are touted for their anti-aging properties, and we hear how they are in red wine, important for heart health, and so on.

For a time, the marketing folks on Madison Avenue seized on the theme, and we saw antioxidants appearing in every cream and face wash on the market. But did these products live up to the hype? And is there a particular antioxidant that really can reverse the signs of aging?

The little known antioxidant that can dramatically improve skin quality

The answer to the second question, at least, is yes. While many cosmetic lines did fail to live up to their billing, there is a little known antioxidant that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, freckles, age spots, and so on.

But before we get to this powerhouse nutrient, it's worth a quick sidebar into how to get the most out of your antioxidants.

For starters, many of the cosmetics were good, but they took a long time to work, so people wound up switching brands, or mixing lines, minimizing the impact of the antioxidants.

They also would eat foods that were known to have antioxidants, but the foods had so little that you would have had to eat many pounds of salmon to get an effective dose.

And that brings us to the mystery nutrient…

What pink flamingos have to tell us about skin care

Flamingos are in fact born white. The pink plumage is a result of their diet. The nutrient that adds this color is a carotenoid, and they acquire it from eating shrimp and blue-green. Similarly, salmon have this same carotenoid, again from their diet, resulting in their pink flesh. The more colorful, the more carotenoid.

So what's it called? Astaxanthin. And here's what it can do for your skin…

Put the brakes on, and possibly reverse, wrinkling

Help regulate moisture in your skin, especially helpful for dry skin

Hold off aging… we all age, but astaxanthin can help minimize its affects

Keep freckles from spreading… and minimize their appearance

Even help fade age spots

As a bonus, this potent antioxidant is even helpful for eyesight and mental function. (It goes without saying that the FDA has not evaluated these statements. Nevertheless, the studies do indicate that it is helpful for all these and more.)

Astaxanthin may be most potent antioxidant for skin care…

…but where can we get it? Ultimately, all the world's supply is created by blue-green algae. It is passed up the food chain to krill, to fish and shrimp, and then to predatory fish and birds, especially flamingos. But if you are looking to make the most of this antioxidant, the best answer is supplementation. You would have to eat a fair amount of wild caught Pacific salmon daily to get enough to impact your skin, and the price for that is prohibitive to most. Not to mention the risk of heavy metal contamination, such as mercury.

While I haven't seen it in a cream yet (Madison Avenue hasn't caught on so far), there is little doubt that it you will get the best results from supplementation. As we've seen in other articles on this site, beauty literally comes from the inside out. Skin health mirrors gut health, you need good bacteria in both places, and your gut feeds these antioxidants to your skin.

Be sure, when looking for supplements, that you find naturally sourced astaxanthin. It is much more potent than the synthetic version. And as ever, when making changes to your diet, consult your doctor.

If you've had questions about the FDA's role in cancer, this should give grist to your mill: the FDA and the medical establishment in general are not primarily motivated by your best interests.

Sure, they may say they are. And they may even think they are. But there is no denying the perverse incentive structure that keeps them making bad decisions, one after the other.

For instance, the government, in the guise of the Institute of Medicine, has conducted its first study in two decades concerning the safety of common vaccinations. The startling results of the study? They don't know enough to say whether or not the vaccines cause any of the linked side effects. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what the study was supposed to figure out? Your tax dollars at work.

Flagship of abuse: the government's treatment of cancer

Let's cut to the chase. The FDA is largely supported – monetarily supported – by the drug companies. If anyone denies this, refer them to the Prescription Drug User Fee Act, which allows drug companies to directly fund the review process for approving new drugs. Sounds like an independent inquiry to me….

They (the FDA directors) also turn their heads when doctors are paid by drug companies for "consulting" (might as well be hush-money), and then vote in favor of the same drug they were "consulting" on.

The FDA's response? There's hardly been any. Over the last 10 years, and since the Prescription Drug User Fee Act, congress has hardly had a single hearing on the FDA (perhaps 3-5 in total). They've essentially been allowed to run astray, giving the drug companies a chance to run amok. And they took it.

The one step they've considered taking was to cap the consulting fees doctors were allowed to take at $50,000 per year from a company affected by the decision. Not a bad chunk of change, hardly a punishment for flagrant violations of conflict of interest rules (and common sense). Makes you wonder about the ethics of the doctors, and of the medical profession, who remain silent on this and other issues. The proposed measure amounts to a confession of wrongdoing. It doesn't fix the problem; it puts a ceiling on bribery.

The American Cancer Society, and all they've done for you…

In 1960, President Nixon signed the National Cancer Act, which allotted $1.6 billion for the first three years to study this disease. Multiply that number times three to get the figure in today's dollars (yes, today's dollars are worth less than yesterday's dollars).

How has that worked out for you? Your chance of getting cancer is about 1 out of 3 for women, 1 in 2 for men! Those numbers have skyrocketed in the last several decades, coincidentally, along with the growth of the cancer industry (drug companies, hospitals, nonprofits, FDA, and so on).

Could it be that the drug companies, which fund the FDA, make too much money off their ineffective cancer treatments to allow progress?

I have recently come across some alternative cancer treatments, within the bounds of conventional medicine, that actually show great promise for treating this cluster of diseases (cancer is not monolithic – there are many types). They are supported by extensive documentation, and will be the subject of future posts.

Meanwhile, an independent audit of the Arizona chapter of the American Cancer Society estimates that 95% of revenue is paid out in salaries and overhead, and only about 5% is used to help people with cancer, or for research. Of course, the head of the chapter, with his mid-six figure salary doesn't care much for the study.

I would encourage you to tell your congressional representative to at least restore oversight of the FDA. In the meantime, your best bet is to take matters into your own hands, and find legitimate research on the subject. Work with your doctor, but remember, doctors are not researchers, and only know what they're told, often by pharmaceutical reps.

Rheumatoid arthritis and the autoimmune system have long been linked, but the link has never been well understood. Meanwhile, this disease continues to ravage, taking independence away from millions of seniors, affecting about 1% of the total U.S. population.

Could it be that everyone is looking in the wrong place?

The prevailing notion of how autoimmune illness takes place is itself rooted in outdated notions of microbial theory. At the time, these theories limited the number of active microbes to those that could be stopped with penicillin. Clearly, there are more disease causing microbes and viruses than just these.

To give you an idea of the scale of microbes to human cells, the National Institute of Health estimates that 90% of what we are consists of non-human bacteria. That is, human cells make up only 10% of our body.

To date, only a tiny fraction of this human bacterial microbiotica has been catalogued. In other words, we only know a fraction of what we don't know.

When old rules die hard

The reason that this notion – the notion that autoimmune disorders are caused by such a small group of viruses and bacteria – has been so hard to root out is because of the system of rules in place around it. Frankly, it comes down to inertia. "Why do we do it this way? Because we've always done it this way". While we now know that there are billions of microbes living on, around, and in concert with the human organism, these rules continue to hamper acceptance of proven phenomena.

In particular, the rules handed down to us by the 19th century German physician Robert Koch, known as Koch's Postulates, have informed extant theories on autoimmune and other bacterial disorders.

While it's likely that your doctor hasn't heard of Koch, the researchers developing medical knowledge have. What's odd is that, even in the face of multitudinous conflicting evidence, they hold fast to these formative principles of microbiology. In other words, they were good for their time, but science is ready to move on.

As far as rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune function, Koch's postulates function as blinders, limiting researchers' field of vision. For instance, the postulates hold that one organism causes a particular illness. This hardly makes sense in light of the facts presented above. These microorganisms function together in systems. It only makes sense to consider one organism's role in relation to another.

While this may seem a small thing on its surface, in practice it makes for extreme myopia. By definition, it creates a mental barrier between researchers and understanding the complex relationships between bacterial communities, and how they affect your rheumatoid arthritis and the autoimmune disorders.

How this information affects you

So we have doctors working from research following outdated, outmoded postulates from a 19th century German physician. Is it any wonder they have missed the fact that there is a gene (PTPN22) that affects rheumatoid arthritis, as well as lupus and other autoimmune diseases, and that this gene is directly affected by microbacteria (Goh KI, Cusick ME, Valle D, et al. The human disease network. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. May 22 2007;104(21):8685-8690.)

For now, a cure for this disease remains elusive. It may be as simple as looking in another place. Time will tell.

What you can do now to offset and reverse rheumatoid arthritis

A few things may help, despite the lack of a cure.

For one, make sure you take care of your emotional health, as emotional traumas are common in those with this condition, and emotions are linked to immune system function.

Secondly, clean up your diet. The average American's diet is inflammatory. Eating less sugar and more anti-inflammatory herbs and spices such as ginger and its cousin turmeric can help mitigate flare-ups.

Finally, be sure to get some sun, as vitamin D can help support immune function.

It seems we're constantly hearing about new psoriasis treatments. But are these treatments really necessary?

Psoriasis and eczema – two closely associated conditions – can be symptoms of a simple underlying cause. And while others are spending their time and money searching for a cure to this annoying and often painful condition, you can employ these simple tricks to rid yourself of these diseases.

Modern life has brought many conveniences. But we have paid a price. We've seen new allergies cropping up, and many of the ingredients used in our soaps, lotions and cosmetics have not been tested. And if they're not tested how can we know if they are allergenic?

Quite often these conditions are triggered by allergies – psoriasis by external allergens, like those above, or metals or animal dander; eczema more frequently by food source allergens. While they are distinct conditions, treatment is similar.

Here are my top ten tips for treatment of psoriasis and eczema:

Stop the itch. For eczema, the rash doesn't appear until you scratch it. Of course, the itch is there, and very compelling! Obviously it's not so simple as to simply stop scratching it. The solution? Instead of using expensive steroid creams, which come with their own challenges, try using a saltwater compress over the affected area. You'll be well served to use a natural salt, such as a minimally processed sea salt, or unprocessed salt mined directly from the ground, such as Himalayan salt. For most, this has proven an effective treatment. And if it isn't strong enough by itself, you can be reasonably sure there will be no side effects from it.

Moisturize. In this case, we're not talking about creams. You want to moisturize from the inside out, making sure your skin is properly hydrated. This, of course, means drinking plenty of pure water (search this site for more information on the different types of water available, and what you need to know about them). It also means getting enough of the right fats. You will want to consider adding an omega 3 supplement, such as fish or krill oil. Make sure the oil is tested for heavy metals, and that it hasn't turned. If it smells or tastes rancid, it is, and should be avoided. Oxidized or rancid fats can do plenty of damage. You will also want to consider something with gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA, such as primrose or borage oil. Some products conveniently combine fish and primrose oil. The plant-based versions, while fine for carb-based metabolic types, will not provide the therapeutic properties of animal sources needed for this use.

Avoid harsh soaps. This seems obvious, but we're not always aware of what soaps are harsh. As a case in point, one of the most prescribed creams for eczema, Aqueous BP, contains sodium lauryl sulfate, which has been shown to decrease the thickness of skin, and cause irritation. Check your soap for this ingredient. Also, virtually all anti-bacterial soaps contain triclosan, which should be avoided while seeking any new psoriasis treatment.

Mind the gut/skin connection. As found elsewhere on this site, your skin and your gut have a lot in common. One of these is the need to maintain proper bacterial balance. And one of the best ways to maintain this balance is with cultured foods, such as yoghurt (plain – the sweetened stuff feeds the "bad" bacteria) or sauerkraut. Every culture has its own fermented foods. As these are not readily available – most have been pasteurized, killing the beneficial bacteria, it is probably a good idea to consider taking a probiotic supplement. The second area to check is for food allergens. 85% of the U.S. population is sub-clinically intolerant of gluten. Odds are, you're one of them. Over time, this intolerance can damage the intestinal wall, making us more vulnerable to other allergens, and cause us to feel run-down. It can also lead to inflammation, and eczema. It might be worth an experiment. Try cutting gluten out of your diet for six weeks or so (for some whose damage is particularly advanced, it can take a year) and see how you feel. (You might feel worse before feeling better. Seek a doctor's care.)

Get some sun. Vitamin D is crucial to optimal health. Some need more than others, depending, it seems on metabolic type. The good news is, you don't have to know exactly how much you need if you are sure to get plenty of UVB rays. As long as you stop short of sunburn, you will be assured of optimal levels. Any excess vitamin D created in the skin is easily broken down, never leaving the skin. By contrast, vitamin D supplements require testing to make sure you don't develop a toxicity – rare, but possible. You will want to get plenty of exposure to the affected area, whether psoriasis or eczema.

Of all the above tips, the most important key is to avoid known allergens. Whether gluten, especially in the case of eczema, or harsh chemicals, as in the case of psoriasis, these allergens are often at cause for inflammatory skin conditions. Whatever new psoriasis treatment you consider, be sure you've covered the basics. You may find that these skin disease are easier to control than you thought.

Hardly. And that's why we thought it was time to reveal the truth behind some of these creams in our first eczema cream review…

Over 10% of the U.S. population has eczema. The study that gave us this information, published in Dermatitis in 2007, also found that households with higher incomes had less incidence of eczema. But does this mean that spending more money on eczema creams can ensure better results?

Hardly. And that's why we thought it was time to reveal the truth behind some of these creams in our first eczema cream review…

Here are a few top products, and the skinny on what makes them work, or not:

Cortizone 10. The good news is this stuff works. Any steroid cream should improve recovery time from atopic dermatitis, or eczema. It will also improve symptoms, giving relief from itching, and help the appearance of any rash. But that's just the beginning.
From there, you'll experience a downward spiral. If you continue to use the steroid cream, your body will acclimate, and, simply, it will stop working. Meanwhile, those hormones – synthetic hormones – are absorbed directly through your skin, whereby they can wreak havoc on your adrenal system. For quick relief, you'll find steroid creams like Cortizone 10 to be very helpful. For the long haul, or if not used judiciously, there may be unwanted side effects. It's up to you and your doctor to decide the best course for you.

Aveeno Eczema Therapy. This moisturizing cream has little against it. It may not have as dramatic an effect as the steroid creams, but it also doesn't carry the same risk of side effects. Distearyldimonium Chloride is the one ingredient that jumped out as being a possible problem, though risks are minimal. It has been tested for toxicity; results so far show that high risks are limited to irritation of skin, eyes or lungs.
The name Aveeno comes from the oat genus, Avena. And, true to form, this product has oat extracts. Oats have been shown to soothe irritated skin, and this product bears these claims, which have been clinically tested. When a disease causes itching, and the itching is the problem – it's the itching that creates the rash – a product that has been clinically shown to reduce the itching associated with eczema brings welcome relief.

Dermarest Eczema Medicated Lotion. This cream has hydrocortisone, a steroid, and so will likely work initially. This synthetic steroid, as in the first product, will eventually become less effective as your body acclimates, and will eventually create problems for your adrenal system. Eczema creams often add ingredients to appeal to consumers looking for more natural products. This product fits that category, and they have added herbs and minerals alongside the steroid.
But don't be fooled. Not only will these herbs not mitigate the risks of using synthetic steroids, Dermarest has included another ingredient better avoided: parabens. These compounds mimic estrogen, and have been linked to breast cancer, having been present in 20 out of 20 tumors, and studies by the EPA have linked it to metabolic, developmental, hormonal, and neurological disorders, as well as various cancers. Until the makers of Dermarest replace the parabens in this formula, it's probably wise to avoid this product.

The good news is that none of the products reviewed contained sodium lauryl sulfate. This compound is a known irritant, and while probably not of great concern when used normally, for those with sensitive skin, or when overused, this compound can indeed contribute to skin irritation and eczema.

For more information on how to effectively – and affordably – deal with the causes of eczema, check back tomorrow for a new article on this vexing skin condition.

Alkaline water systems carry the promise of eternal youth, curing cancer, restoring heart health, and cleaning up those pesky free radicals everyone is so worried about.

But does the miracle tonic – ionized H2O (aka electrocuted water) – measure up to its billing?

Want to buy an alkaline water system?

You'll likely meet with a slick MLM salesperson, armed to the teeth with clever sound bites on why you must have this ionizer. They'll scare you with statistics, which may or may not be accurate, for all the ills caused by drinking deadly not-alkaline-enough water.

The truth is that there is almost no scientific evidence supporting alkaline water, though in the case of cancer, there are a few early studies that make a case against a generally alkaline environment for curing cancer. Despite this study debunking any premature assertions that alkalized water can cure cancer, the brokers keep feeding their sales reps pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo to frighten consumers into buying their over-priced, over-promising ionizers.

What an ionizer won't do for you:

The average American drinks a gallon of soda per week. This load of HFCS brings with it a host of liabilities for chronic disease. So getting people to drink more water, in place of soda, is a good idea.

It may be true that some people enjoy positive health effects from drinking ionized water. Without proper studies, we don't know if the water helped their particular condition, or if they benefited principally from just drinking more water.

One thing we can say for sure, there is no scientific reason to believe that alkalized water will cure cancer. None.

I know that some people have latched onto this belief, that alkalized water will cure cancer, cast out demons, what have you. For them, it is like a religious superstition. Not insignificantly, this craze got started in Korea and Japan, countries known for this sort of superstition.

But now that you know there is no real scientific underpinning, and taking into account that water with the pH produced by ionizers has never been consumed by humans before the advent of ionizers (many health-giving mountain springs are acidic!), you can with confidence avoid this craze and save your money.

Adding insult to injury

To make matters worse, an ionizer is not a filter. The unit they sell you may come with a filter, but it is likely an inferior charcoal filter. Reverse osmosis is unsuitable for this ionizers: it wastes too much water – out of four gallons, you get one, the rest going to the sewer – and the ionizer itself yields one gallon from every two, sending the acidic half of the water down the drain.

So with the most effective filter out, and with no real assurance that the water is properly filtered, the really bad stuff comes through. This includes pharmaceuticals, toxins, mold spores, and so on.

On the other hand, some use distillers. And that's something we know for sure: water without minerals is bad for you. Humans have always drunk water from sources laced with minerals.

In a future article we will delve further into what makes water healthy, and what types of filters are best for your family.
